Ilongga jumper nets gold

ILONGGA Alexie Mae Caimoso Brooks cruised to a golden finish in the secondary girls high jump event of the 2019 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet on Monday at the Villareal Stadium in Roxas City, Capiz.

Brooksa native of Leon, Iloilo – submitted 1.72 meters to deliver the Ilonggos its first gold medal in the event which served as a qualifier for the 2019 Palarong Pambansa. Fellow Ilongga Cathy Nebreja notched the bronze medal.

“I am happy to win the gold medal kasi medyo kulang ako sa training this year because ‘yung pinagpapractisan ko sa Iloilo walang foam,” said the Iloilo National High School standout.

Aside from the high jump event, the 17-year-old Brooks will also be competing in three other WVRAA Meet athletics events namely 100 meter hurdles, long jump and 4×100 relay.

Edna Magtubo of Carles, Iloilo, meanwhile, bagged a gold medal in secondary girls 3000 meter run, while Seth Clarence Seduco and Rosel Mahilum have bronze medals in secondary boys shot put and elementary girls high jump, respectively.

Jamela Poderoso Deasis and Emgiel Duran had a gold-silver finish in secondary girls’ shot put with the former tallying 11.23 meters and the latter submitting 9.99 meters. Cherry Ann Escala of Iloilo captured bronze medal with 9.52 meters.

Julianne Rongo, meanwhile, bagged the Negros’ second gold after topping the secondary girls 30 meter distance archery at the Pueblo de Panay in Lawaan, Roxas City. Salvador Escalante III later won the gold in men’s event.

Rongo tallied 309 points to finish with the gold medal, while Iloilo Province’s Yna Patricia Teruel (296) and Aklan’s Britney Samson (294) settled for silver and bronze medal, respectively.

Armiashane Malicse and Eughene Lachica bagged a gold each for Aklan in elementary girls shot put and secondary girls high jump, respectively, while JeaAngel Esquelito claimed a gold in secondary girls gymnastics.

Mark Kent Elequillo delivered the first gold medal for Capiz in bocce when he defeated the bet from Aklan in the finals, 12-6./PN
