ILOILO — A 17-year-old Ilonggo sprinter who captured three silver medals at the ASEAN School Games has received a P75,000 cash incentive from the Iloilo provincial government, underscoring the province’s growing reputation as a breeding ground for elite young athletes.
Kian Labar of Dingle, Iloilo formally received the incentive on April 23 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol, following his strong showing in the regional competition held in Brunei in November 2025.
Labar delivered a standout performance by clinching silver medals in the 200 meters, 400 meters, and the 4×400-meter relay, cementing his status as one of the country’s most promising young track and field talents.
The awarding was led on behalf of Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. by Head Executive Assistant and Population Office Head Atty. Ruel Von Superio, together with Dr. Ma. Janelyn Fundal, head of the Iloilo Sports Development and Management Office (ISDMO), and Atty. Gian Carlo Diana.
Provincial officials highlighted that Labar’s achievement boosts Iloilo’s standing as an emerging powerhouse in grassroots athletics and reflects the effectiveness of its sports development programs.
“With his triple-silver finish and the recognition from the provincial government, Kian Labar’s journey as one of the Philippines’ most promising young sprinters continues to gain momentum,” according Ray Cabarles, sports development officer of the ISDMO.
Authorities expressed optimism that Labar’s international success will inspire more Ilonggo youth to pursue competitive sports and represent the province in future global competitions.
Labar is currently preparing for the upcoming Palarong Pambansa, scheduled from May 24 to 31 in Agusan del Sur./PN
