BACOLOD City – The impeachment complaint filed against President Rodrigo Duterte is bad for the Negros Island Region (NIR) whose fate is at the mercy of the current administration, a business group leader said.

Magdalo party-list’s Rep. Gary Alejano of Sipalay, Negros Occidental filed the impeachment complaint at the House of Representatives for Duterte’s alleged betrayal of public trust and corruption.

The legislator also cited the “state policy of killing drug offenders” as the strongest of the five grounds for the possible ouster of Duterte.

Given that Alejano hails from Negros, the impeachment complaint against Duterte will definitely have an adverse effect to the push for the retention of the NIR, said Frank Carbon, regional governor of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) in Negros Island Region (NIR) and Western Visayas.

NIR was created in May 2015 through an executive order issued by then President Benigno Aquino III. Duterte, however, said his administration has no budget for the new region.

Just this January, Duterte also said the NIR was the third most drug-affected region in the country. He told this to 30 of the 32 mayors in Negros Occidental, including Bacolod City, who attended the meeting he called in Malacañang.

The impeachment complaint is a distraction that will only drag the NIR and the country down, said Carbon.

There are plenty of productive activities the people should focus on, he stressed.

“Having no substantial proof, these allegations will not gain support from the people, including us in the local business sector thus, the impeachment will likely not prosper,” said Carbon.

In the graft and corruption allegation, Alejano said the President has several bank accounts amounting to P2.2 billion that were not declared in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.

But according to Carbon, “The impeachment is a sort of distraction to the gains that we have now.”

He pointed out that Philippines is lagging behind other nations in Southeast Asia thus impeaching the President is a “bad move.” (PNA)
