In the ocean of festivals mid-sized and small ones should be easy to find

BY HELEN J CATALBAS

AS THE new year 2024 rolls on, the ocean of festivals grows wider and wider the world over.

Festivals go by various attributes. Bizarre. Funny. Solemn. Hypnotic. Riotous. Colorful. Nonsense. Dramatic. Acrobatic. Theatrical. Primitive. Modern. Futuristic. Outrageous. Extravagant. Primitive. Serious. Comical. Amazing.

Somewhere in the world there is one festival or the other. Some we would rather not have because they are such big blah!

In the ocean of festivals, there are whales and fries. The former easily devour schools of the latter. The mid-sized ones are predators or preys or both at the same time.

If we look closely at the names of festivals, we can’t help but be amazed at how creative festival name-givers could be.

There are festival names that are repetition of two-syllable words only their own organizers know the meaning of.

Other festival names are totally strange-sounding perhaps only their managers recognize what they are and where on planet Earth are they presented or celebrated.

We have always maintained that unless the performers belong to the same family and their audience is composed only of their neighbors in the same town or province, festival organizers should integrate the location in the name of the festival so small and mid-sized ones can survive in the ocean of festivals and be easy to find./PN
