ILOILO City – The Ilonggo Philippine Army soldier killed in an airstrike in Marawi City last week will be buried on Independence Day, June 12, in Leon, Iloilo.
The remains of Private First Class Anthony Calugas Capulot were flown to Iloilo on Saturday afternoon, June 3.
From the Iloilo Airport, these were fetched by family members and friends and brought to Sitio Pagas, Barangay Ayabang, Leon town.
Capulot, 25, will be buried at Primundas Garden after an 8:30 a.m. requiem mass at the Sta. Catalina Alexandria Parish Church in Leon.
Eleven soldiers were killed in a Philippine Air Force airstrike supposedly targeting the Maute terrorist group in Marawi City on May 31.
At the time of this death, Capulot was on his fourth year of service in the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
“It’s sad but sometimes it happens in the fog of war. The coordination was not properly done,” said Defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana about the “friendly fire.”
Though a native of Barangay Igcadios, Leon his family deemed it better to take Capulot’s remains to the house of his grandmother in Sitio Pagas, Barangay Ayabang.
Capulot was assigned to the 15th Infantry Battalion, Alpha Company of the Philippine Army based in Lanao del Norte as gunner. The last time he came home was in December 2016.
He was a great grandson of World War II hero Jose Cabalfin Calugas, the first Filipino soldier to receive a US medal of honor for gallantry in the war.
According to family members, Capulot was helping send his younger siblings to school./PN
