DESPITE being saddled with injuries, Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderboltz will still be good to go when it begins its campaign in the Akari National High School Volleyball Championships today at the Adamson Gym in Manila.

Heading into the two-day competition, the Western Visayas representatives were hobbled with injuries on key players – Joan Marie Monares, Joan Doguna and Hannah Quanico.

While Monares and Doguna were good to go into the nationals, Quanico was a late scratch in the 12-woman roster after suffering a lumbosacral APL injury during practice.

“Pipilitin ko pong makalaro to help the team. Sayang rin naman because it is a rare opportunity for us to play in this kind of tournament in Manila,” said Monares, who is nursing a knee injury she suffered in WVPRISAA.

Other members of the squad are Marianne Sotomil, Rhean Hebraica Almendralejo, Marixi Maligmat, Shane Carmona, Beatrice Decena, Jeanny Padilla, Kiesha Bedonia, Nohlin Jundana, and Alyssa Bertolano.

To open things up, Thunderboltz will be facing Iligan National High School, University of Cordilleras, Far Eastern University and Holy Rosary today. If ever they will advance, the semifinals and finals are to be played on Sunday.

Sagay Sepak Takraw Team A continued its winning ways from the WVRAA after ruling the girls division of the 3rd Sepak Takraw Tournament held at the Sagay City National High School in Negros Occidental.

Sagay Sepak Takraw A, which was mentored by Christopher Uychiat, dominated the field, which is composed of seven other teams. Talisay City and Sagay City Team B took the second and third place, respectively.

The Sagay City-based girls’ team will be representing Western Visayas in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa on April in Vigan, Ilocos sur after their successful stint last month in Iloilo.

In the 13 under division, Bata National High School dominated 10 other teams as Estefania Elementary School of Bacolod City settled for first runner-up followed by Escalante City.

Bata Team A and Bata Team B also dominated the 16 under division with a 1-2 finish as Victorias City settled second runner-up while CIS (Bacolod/Talisay) ruled the 35-Up category followed by Sagay City and Victorias City.

“We are looking forward for a bigger event next year with more teams from across the province taking the hard court,” said tournament manager Adonis Solano./PN
