MANILA – MRT-Negros scored an emotional 20-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-21, 15-5 win over Sabong International Spikers to finish their PNVF Champions League campaign in fifth place on Friday at the Aquamarine Recreational Center in Lipa, Batangas.

Christian Marcelino spearheaded the offense with 16 points, on 15 attacks and a block, to go with eight excellent digs. Jian Matthew Salarzon and Leo Ordiales added 15 markers apiece, while Jhun Kahulugan and Gadpray Aresgado tallied 11 and 10 markers, respectively.

Louie Pudadera finished with 25 excellent sets on top of three points, including two service aces, while John Kade Parreño had nine excellent digs for the squad.

The Negros Occidental-based volleyball team dedicated their win to Colegio de Santa Ana de Victorias player Mike Beronio.

Beronio, who was among those who tried out for a spot in the MRT-Negros team, died early Thursday due infection from a brain surgery after being involved in a motorcycle accident recently.

“Kaya ganun talaga ‘yung dedication namin sa game na ‘to para sa kanya,” said MRT-Negros head coach Ralph Savellano. 

He added: “It is an honor to play in this kind of league. I’m very proud of my team, the youngest team in this league. Napakagandang experience sa amin nito.”

Sabong International, which settled for sixth place, was led by Jelord Talisayan with 16 points, including 14 attacks, and Charles David Absin with 13 markers./PN
