ILOILO – To ensure peaceful, orderly, and credible national and local elections this May 12, the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) has intensified its operations against loose firearms, resulting in the arrest of 23 individuals and the confiscation of an equal number of firearms.
As of March 30, police records show that since the implementation of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) gun ban on January 12, the IPPO has recorded 23 violations. All incidents led to the seizure of firearms and arrests of violators, according to IPPO director Colonel Bayani Razalan.
The gun ban, which will be in effect until June 11, prohibits the carrying of firearms – and other deadly implements such as knives, among others – to help prevent election-related violence.
Among all municipal police stations, Cabatuan recorded the highest number of gun ban violations with three cases. Passi City, Lambunao, Dueñas, and Sara followed with two cases each.
Apart from gun ban operations, the IPPO also implemented 22 search warrants, resulting in the arrest of 20 individuals and the seizure of 19 firearms and two explosives.
“To reduce the risks associated with firearm use during the election period, we have increased monitoring operations targeting individuals illegally possessing firearms and explosives,” said Razalan.
He warned that anyone caught violating the gun ban or unlawfully possessing firearms will face serious legal consequences.
“The IPPO is fully committed to ensuring a safe and peaceful election. We urge the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities. Together, we can maintain peace and order during this critical time,” Razalan added./PN
