MANILA – Will former Iloilo City councilor Nielex “Lex” Tupas make a political comeback?
Just a few months before the 2016 elections, Tupas, then the No. 1 councilor, dropped his plan to run for vice mayor and was appointed chief operating officer and executive director of the National Youth Commission (NYC).
“I am grateful of the strong and warm support of the Ilonggos and for considering me a strong potential candidate for a higher position,” he told Panay News. “I will continue to listen to the Ilonggos and pray for God’s guidance.”
When asked whether he is considering a run for the city mayor’s office, the youngest son of the late Iloilo governor Niel Tupas Sr. did not directly answer the question. He said his decision will be based on what is best for the city.
“I have already served for three terms as city councilor. Just like any graduation, I believe I am ready to serve in a higher capacity if given the opportunity,” Tupas said.
Tupas also said his plan for the 2019 elections will become clearer “by end of the year or by next year.”
His appointment to NYC, he said, “made me value, appreciate and know how much I love Iloilo City.”
JUMPING SHIP TO PDP-LABAN?
Tupas said Iloilo City’s Rep. Jerry Treñas invited him and wife Councilor Candice Tupas to a meeting on April 10.
Treñas wanted them to join the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), the political party of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“[The congressman] wants us to still be together in the next elections. I have no decision yet and if ever I will run, definitely it won’t be for the same position I held for three terms and depending on the will of God and what the people of Iloilo City want.”
Tupas also said he was proud of what his wife has accomplished so far.
She had introduced numerous legislations on health, trade and industry, and tourism, he said.
The newbie councilor, according to him, has built her own “very good image and reputation” by being a dedicated public servant who serves the community with compassion./PN
