It ain’t a perfect world

LAST Tuesday’s PN article which said that Global Business Power (GBP) is named as one of the “Best Companies to Work For” in the recent awards organized by Human Resources (HR) Asia, a magazine for HR Professionals, provides much food for thought.

HR may be defined as the department of a business or organization that deals with the administration, management and training of employees.

GBP’s HR department is clearly one which seeks innovative solutions to the knotty problems that are experienced when the vagaries of human behavior have to be dealt with.

One aspect is the question of finding a fair method of assessing the contribution (or otherwise) of employees to the success of the company. Normally, the HR department oversees the rating judged by an employee’s supervisor.

One of our acquaintances, who is employed by GBP, experienced an interesting role reversal recently. He was instructed by the HR department to rate his boss rather than the other way round. He fulfilled the task to the best of his ability but was unable to honestly assess his boss with unqualified praise. After all, who can?

Although HR promised confidentiality, the assessment emerged, and the boss, understandably, was not pleased. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a deterioration of the relationship between boss and subordinate. Let us hope that the fractured relationship can be soon mended, perhaps facilitated by HR, so that harmony can be restored.

The fight against cyberfraud is challenging, partly because many of us are not yet fully relaxed with undertaking financial cybertransactions. Therefore, we salute the Bankers Association of the Philippines which draws our attention to the various approaches by scammers who wish to victimize us.

A recent advertisement from the Association which counsels us against accepting communications purporting to originate from our bank but addressed ‘Dear Account Holder’ is much appreciated.

It is becoming harder for us to avoid being duped by illegitimate emails.

We need to become increasingly vigilant./PN
