MANILA – The number of jobless Filipinos has dropped to 22.9 percent (10.4 million) from 25.1 percent (11.2 million) in December 2016, according to the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.
SWS said that the joblessness rate among women fell from 40.2 percent to 31.2 percent, while more jobless men (14.1 percent to 16.6 percent) were looking for employment.
More Filipinos belonging to the 25-34 and 35-44 age groups were able to secure a job, the survey with 1,200 respondents added.
The Malacañang said that the survey, conducted between March 25 to 28, 2017, showed the “affirmation of the significant strides of the Duterte administration in sustaining the country’s robust economic growth and making it inclusive.”
Public infrastructure investments, through the government’s “build” campaign, will boost employment opportunities and contribute in countryside development, according to presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella on Monday.
“The new roads, bridges and railways would make the flow of commodities and services cost and time efficient thereby expanding the domestic economy,” he noted.
Meanwhile, SWS said that surveyed Filipinos were less optimistic (from 37 percent to 29 percent) about finding a job in the next 12 months.
Labor force participation, however, increased from 44.8 million adults to 45.5 million adults, it reported./PN
