GUIMARAS — The local government unit (LGU) of Jordan has expressed full readiness for the 48th staging of “Ang Pagtaltal sa Balaan Bukid 2026,” set on Good Friday, April 3.
Mayor John Edward Gando said preparations are in place, with the Guimaras provincial government, led by Gov. Lucille Nava, allocating P650,000 for the event, supplemented by P400,000 from the LGU-Jordan to enhance this year’s production.
A short program will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the municipal hall grounds, followed by the main “Ang Pagtaltal” production at 12 noon. This year marks a major change in venue, with performances moved from the town plaza—known as the “smallest plaza”—to the municipal hall grounds.
“One of the major changes this year is the relocation of the venue. From the smallest plaza, we are now holding it in front of the municipal hall as we continue to find ways to further improve and promote the celebration,” Gando said during a press conference on March 26.
The production will depict key biblical scenes, including the triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the agony in Gethsemane, the arrest and trial of Jesus, and the crucifixion.
Following the initial performance, the reenactment will proceed toward Balaan Bukid, with additional scenes staged at various points along the route, such as the encounter with the women of Jerusalem, the offering of water to Jesus, the assistance of Simon of Cyrene, and the meeting with Veronica.
Gando said the LGU expects a higher turnout this year, surpassing last year’s recorded 24,400 pilgrims and tourists.
“We are optimistic that more visitors will come this year. Many of them also explore other destinations in Guimaras, so we expect a better turnout for the 2026 Lenten observance,” he added.
The mayor also shared his personal devotion to the event, noting that he has portrayed the role of Nicodemus for over a decade.
“This has been my vow since Grade 4. As long as I am in Guimaras, I will continue fulfilling this as my way of sharing in the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Gando said.
He also previously took on roles such as a child of Jerusalem, torchbearer, water carrier, and crowd leader.
