JOSHUA Garcia came under fire on social media after netizens noticed that his TikTok account had reposted a video seemingly expressing support for Vice President Sara Duterte, who is facing trial before the Senate impeachment court.
Garcia’s TikTok account reposted a fan-made video that defended Duterte and mocked the prosecution in the ongoing impeachment proceedings. The post included hashtags showing support for the Dutertes.
Screen recordings and screenshots of Garcia’s online activity circulated online, with many netizens criticizing him and accusing him of being a supporter of the Duterte political camp. He is currently trending on X (formerly Twitter), as of this writing.
Following the repost, other screenshots showing that Garcia was following Duterte on Instagram also circulated online. However, as of this writing, the actor has seemingly unfollowed the Vice President.
Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, who is an ally of the Dutertes, and a fugitive from justice, also posted about Garcia’s online activity and thanked the actor for his apparent support.
“Kakampinks, huwag na kayong ma-i-stress kay Joshua Garcia. In an industry where showing support for Inday Sara Duterte could invite cancellation, Joshua refuses to hide his political convictions. Daghang salamat, Joshua, for choosing integrity over a manufactured image. Such conviction as yours is rare, and such courage as yours deserves respect,” wrote the politician.
As of this writing, Garcia has not publicly addressed the controversy. (Jessica Ann Evangelista © Philippine Daily Inquirer)
