MANILA – A newspaper reporter denied disclosing information that supported one of the allegations in the impeachment complaint filed against Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Jomar Canlas of The Manila Times said he never told complainant Atty. Lorenzo “Larry” Gadon that Supreme Court Associate Justice Teresita de Castro was the source of his report that Sereno allegedly falsified court documents in 2013.

“I hereby deny that I have intimated to Atty. Gadon that the source of facts in my article, ‘Justice blasts Sereno over TRO mess’ was Supreme Court Associate Justice Teresita J. Leonardo-de Castro,” Canlas told the House of Representatives justice committee yesterday.

“I have never revealed to anyone my source or sources, who, suffice it to say, are reliable and well-placed,” the reporter added. “While we have met last March, I did not tell Atty. Gadon anything about that.”

This was contrary to Gadon’s claim during a previous House committee hearing on the impeachment complaint where the lawyer said De Castro confirmed to Canlas that she confronted Sereno for omitting her recommendation in a decision she wrote on 2013.

Yesterday Gadon also contradicted an earlier statement, saying he was no longer certain whether that information came from Canlas or someone else helping him get evidence against Sereno.

“I really cannot remember now whether it was Canlas who have intimated it to me but he may have intimated it to me, your honor,” Gadon said. “Well, it doesn’t change the fact that there was an article on the TRO.”

“The existence of the incident of changing the contents of the TRO will be testified by Associate Justice Teresita De Castro herself. I really cannot remember because there are a lot of people giving me information that time,” he added.

The allegation that Sereno tampered with De Castro’s decision stopping the disqualification of the Senior Citizens party-list was one of the grounds for impeachment that Gadon raised./PN
