KALIBO, Aklan – The Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of Kalibo is eyeing to revive the imposition of environmental fees to tourists.
Councilor Cynthia Dela Cruz said the imposition of environmental fees to tourists is being proposed for the jetty port currently being constructed in Barangay Pook in the town.
The SB has endorsed the operation of the Lucio Tan-affiliated Mabuhay Maritime Express Transport Inc. (MMET) to develop the port.
“If materialized, the local government of Kalibo would use the environment fee in a transparent manner to ensure the conservation of the environment,” Dela Cruz said.
The MMET is coordinating with the provincial government to develop the 2,803-square meter area in the barangay for the seamless travel of tourists coming from the airport to Boracay.
It planned to place two areas for departure and arrivals, with 450 seating capacity.
Years ago, the government planned to collect environmental fees at the Kalibo International Airport. The plan, however, was aborted after it received opposition from the public./PN
