Kalibo water district to develop new sources

KALIBO, Aklan – The need to provide stable supply of potable water to its concessionaires prompted the Metro Kalibo Water District (MKWD) to tap the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA).

The MKWD asked for LWUA’s help to develop other water sources in Aklan.

Aside from Kalibo, the water district also provides water to its consumers in Banga, New Washington and portions of Batan and Balete.

It also provides bulk water to the Numancia Water District, which has over 28,000 connections.

LWUA administrator Jeci Lapuz discussed his proposals with MKWD general manager Edmund Peralta and Gov. Florencio Miraflores.

Lapuz said Aklan must find new “surface water” sources – like the Aklan River – instead of “underground water” sources.

This will cut ground development and drilling works for the next 10 years, Lapuz added.

Lapuz cited a study showing that the available groundwater in the country is depleting.

He added that groundwater sources can no longer provide enough supply to Aklan consumers, especially that there is a rising demand in Kalibo and its neighboring town New Washington.

Meanwhile, Miraflores asked for the feasibility of a surface water source for the Ibajay Water District, which also needs to address its growing service demand. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
