BACOLOD City — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that Alert Level 2 remains in effect for Mount Kanlaon following weak ash emissions observed from its summit crater.
Time-lapse footage taken at 8:23 a.m. on October 5 showed grayish plumes rising about 500 meters above the crater before drifting southwest, according to the IP camera at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.
PHIVOLCS’ bulletin at 5 a.m. on October 5 noted that the volcano is under increased unrest, with 65 volcanic earthquakes recorded, a sulfur dioxide flux of 1,638 tonnes per day on October 4, and plumes reaching 650 meters. Ground deformation measurements indicate that the volcano’s edifice remains inflated, suggesting continued magmatic activity.
Authorities strictly prohibit entry into the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) and the operation of any aircraft near the volcano. PHIVOLCS warned of potential hazards, including sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.
The Department of Health–Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR) Center for Health Development issued a Wind Alert reminding residents to remain vigilant and follow official advisories. Health and safety measures include:
* Stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed; hang wet curtains to block ash and gases.
* Wear properly fitted face masks or use damp cloths; individuals with asthma or COPD should have sufficient inhalers and medicines.
* Protect eyes with goggles; avoid contact lenses.
* Ensure food and water safety by washing hands thoroughly and covering water containers.
* Seek medical attention immediately if experiencing stomach pain or vomiting.
Residents near Kanlaon are urged to strictly comply with instructions from authorities as the volcano remains under increased alert./PN
