MANILA — A crucial breakthrough in the Senate’s investigation into alleged fund irregularities may be imminent, as Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson revealed that a key witness is set to present documentary proof that could “complete the chain of evidence” in the high-profile case.
Lacson, who will soon reassume chairmanship of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, said the “very important witness” is preparing an affidavit supported by ledgers, digital records, and other documents that could significantly strengthen the case.
“Importante kasi pwedeng ma-wrap up ‘yung lahat ng kelangang malaman patungo pati sa prosecution at conviction,” Lacson said at the Kapihan sa Senado forum, noting that the new evidence could tie together previously unconnected threads.
He added that the witness was introduced through an intermediary and possesses information not yet disclosed in prior hearings. However, Lacson stressed that the Senate panel will only accept testimonies backed by solid evidence.
“Sabi ko sa kanya kung magme-mention lang ng pangalan na walang suportang dokumento, ‘wag na lang mag-mention kasi baka makasira lang ng tao,” he said.
The next committee hearing, tentatively scheduled for November 14, will also deliberate on issuing a subpoena for retired Marine T/Sgt. Orly Guteza, whose testimony has implicated former Speaker Martin Romualdez in the alleged scheme.
“What we need kay Guteza is ‘yung magko-corroborate whether it’s another witness or whatever documentary evidence na meron siyang hawak para maipakita niya. Otherwise, mere allegation by one person, parang baka hindi mag-hold water,” Lacson explained.
Other witnesses have reportedly linked former Representative Zaldy Co to the same controversy. Lacson encouraged Guteza and other accusers to bring their evidence to the Department of Justice or the Office of the Ombudsman if their goal is to pursue prosecution.
“Kung ang hangad mo mag-prosecute, makapagpa–convict talaga, dapat humarap sa DOJ o Ombudsman,” he said.
Lacson reaffirmed his commitment to impartiality as the probe progresses, dispelling talk that the inquiry is being steered to protect certain figures.
“May mga talks na may pinagtatakpan, merong pinipili, hindi ganon... where the evidence leads us, we’ll go there,” he vowed.
The upcoming hearing is expected to be a turning point in the Senate’s effort to establish clear accountability and trace the alleged misuse of public funds to its key architects./PN
