ILOILO City – The La Paz Plaza Football Ground is poised to make history on October 7, 2025, when it becomes the first public football field in Western Visayas equipped with an internationally recognized lighting system — a P17.3-million upgrade expected to cement Iloilo City’s standing as a football hub.
Mayor Raisa Treñas said, “This project is more than just putting up lights; it’s about giving our athletes, especially the youth, a safe, professional, and inspiring venue where they can play, train, and even dream bigger. Sports teaches discipline and camaraderie, and it builds pride for our city.”
The lighting system was made possible through a partnership between the Iloilo City Government, Meralco PowerGen, and the One Meralco Foundation.
Antonio Cabalhug Jr. of Meralco PowerGen emphasized the project’s broader value: “We see this not only as a project but as a legacy. Investing in proper sports facilities is investing in the next generation, and we are glad to be working hand in hand with the city government of Iloilo.”
Meanwhile, Michael Guanco, also of Meralco PowerGen, underscored its technical significance.
“The lighting system is designed to meet international standards. It ensures uniform brightness across the field and prioritizes energy efficiency. This way, the venue will be playable not only for local training sessions but also for regional and national-level matches, while keeping operations sustainable,” he explained.
According to the project update, catwalk installations on Towers 1 and 2 have been completed, while preparations for Towers 3 and 4 are ongoing.
All football lights have been delivered, groundwork for electrical wiring is finished, and testing and commissioning are set for September 26, weather permitting.
The official lighting ceremony will take place on October 7 at 5:45 p.m., which Mayor Treñas described as “a proud moment not only for Iloilo City but for every Ilonggo who believes in the power of sports to transform lives.”/PN
