MANILA – The De La Salle University Lady Spikers completed its quest for back-to-back titles with a 19-25, 25-14, 18-25, 25-18, 15-10 win over the Ateneo Lady Eagles in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 79 women’s basketball finals on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Kim Kianna Dy led the way with a season-high 19 points for the Lady Spikers, which captured its 10th UAAP women’s volleyball championship overall – its fourth in the last six years.
Ernestine Tiamzon added 16 markers, while Finals MVP Desiree Cheng and Season MVP Mary Joy Baron contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Lady Spikers, which also won the series-opener, 21-25, 29-27, 25-22, 25-20.
Graduating Kim Fajardo, meanwhile, finished her UAAP playing career with six points and 47 excellent sets, as well as three UAAP championships in five finals appearance.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth set, the Lady Spikers were in a tight exchange early in the fourth before surging to an 18-14 lead. The edge later grew to six points on an ace by Tiamzon before Dy ended it with a drop shot.
The Lady Spikers went on a strong start in the fifth set behind Tiamzon, Dy and Baron for a 9-3 lead. The Lady Eagles then mounted a huge run to come to within 10-8 on an ace by Negrense Kassandra Gequillana.
The Lady Spikers responded with three straight points courtesy of Cheng and back-to-back hits by Tiamzon for a 13-9 lead. After a hit by the Lady Eagles, Baron scored for a 14-10 lead before ending the match with a Lady Eagles error.
Meanwhile, the Ateneo Blue Eagles claimed its third consecutive men’s volleyball championship following a come-from-behind 18-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-18, 15-13 win over the National University Bulldogs.
Four-time Season MVP Marck Espejo led the way with 27 points, on 25 attacks, while Finals MVP Tony Koyfman added 11 markers for the Blue Eagles, which has stretched its unbeaten run to 30 games./PN
