CEBU City – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 7 issued a work stoppage order on a mall construction project at the South Road Properties.
Regional Director Exequiel R. Sarcauga said a complaint from one of the workers at the construction project prompted them to send a labor laws compliance officer to the site.
Violations included deficiencies under the Occupational Safety and Health Standards and those covered by General Labor Standards, according to the labor law compliance officer Engr. Rustico Levi Custorio.
“The primary reason that we issued a work stoppage order is the presence of imminent danger observed at the site,” said Sarcauga. “The construction project site uses only monkey ladder and canopy structure, which serves as a scaffold and platform for its exterior works.”
Exterior works included cladding, painting and roofing, among others.
The order was issued to the project manager, contractor and owner on Feb. 20. A mandatory conference with the parties was held the following day.
Mercado Builders, Inc., project manager of IL Corso Festival Mall Project, together with RBM Construction, its independent contractor, appeared at the DOLE office for the mandatory conference on Tuesday.
The DOLE Region 7 ordered the contractors, including Filinvest Land, Inc., owner of the project, to “cease and desist from all their exterior operations until such time that imminent danger is rectified.” (PNA)
