BORACAY – Ladyboys in this world-famous island are once again under fire amid the recent series of crimes involving them.
Tourists were advised to be extra cautious against ladyboys who rob their customers, local officials said.
“Ladyboy” is a colloquial term referring to male transvestites. In Boracay, some ladyboys are working as prostitutes.
According to Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member Dante Pagsuguiron, some tourists have sought help from the local police after ladyboys allegedly robbed them.
Municipal Ordinance No. 160 series of 2002 prohibits any individual or establishment to practice, facilitate or engage prostitution in Malay, Aklan.
Pagsuguiron added that “if we cannot stop” the ladyboys’ illegal activities, “this will affect the tourism industry in the island.”
SB member Frolibar Bautista said the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center (BTAC) and barangay officials must implement the municipal ordinance and arrest ladyboys who are involved in prostitution.

BTAC head Senior Inspector Jose Mark Anthony Gesulga, Department of Tourism-Boracay officer-in-charge Kristoffer Leo Velete, Malay Chief Tourism Operations Officer Felix delos Santos, Malay Executive Officer V Rowen Aguirre, and the three village chiefs in Boracay will be invited to the SB’s regular session to strategize the crackdown on ladyboys perpetrating crimes.
