CAPIZ — The vibrant spirit of the Lunar New Year filled the air on February 17 as the Capiz Provincial Government, in partnership with the Filipino-Chinese community, led the release of 300 floating lanterns along the serene waters of the Panay River.
The annual event, marking the arrival of the Year of the Fire Horse, drew local officials, community leaders, and residents who gathered to celebrate shared traditions and aspirations for the year ahead.
Amid the enchanting evening ambiance, participants wrote their wishes, dreams, and messages of positivity on paper lanterns before gently setting them afloat. Each flickering light symbolized the release of negativity and misfortune, while welcoming blessings of good luck, peace, and prosperity.
The Philippines has long embraced cultural traditions linked to the Chinese New Year, including the symbolic release of lanterns believed to ward off bad spirits and life’s challenges. Organizers said the activity reflected the collective hopes of Capisnons for a brighter and more harmonious future.
As the lanterns drifted across the river’s surface, their shimmering reflections created a breathtaking scene reminiscent of stars scattered across the night sky. Cultural beliefs hold that illuminated lanterns carry prayers and wishes to deities and ancestors, signifying unity and renewed hope within the community.
The celebration concluded with a dazzling fireworks display that lit up the sky, blending bursts of color with the glowing lanterns below and capping the festivities on a festive note.
