LEA Salonga expressed her profound love for her trans child Nic Chien on his 19th birthday, admiring his honesty and courage as he grows into who he is meant to be.
The Broadway superstar dedicated a birthday message to Nic through her Instagram page on Friday, May 16.
“This is the most precious human being in my little world. The one who captured my heart from the word go. The one that made me realize how insignificant my life was, until that initial piercing cry at 12:12 pm on May 16, 2006,” Salonga said of her only child.
“And now, he is turning 19. With each step into adulthood, my heart grows in ways I couldn’t have predicted,” she continued. “That he is, with honesty and courage, growing into who he’s meant to be makes me incredibly proud.”
Concluding her post, she added, “Happy Birthday, my Nic! I love you to infinity!”
Salonga has been vocal in supporting her son amid his transition, saying she wants him to feel safe, strong and “ready to conquer the world on their own terms.”
“The one thing I’ve learned is that you have to raise your child the way your child needs to be raised,” she said in an interview for US magazine People. “As a parent, I want to set my child up for success.”
“You have to meet your child where they are,” she added.
The mother and son are set to share the stage in August for the Philippine production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” Salonga will play the Witch while Nic was cast as Jack. (Anne Pasajol © Philippine Daily Inquirer)
