BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod wants to have LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs in all existing and soon-to-be-installed streetlights.
Many streetlights need to be upgraded, with some of them in use for more than 10 years and already getting dimmer, the city council said in a resolution addressed to Rep. Greg Gasataya and Public Works secretary Mark Villar.
“The condition of these streetlights [is] no longer conducive for motorists traveling at night and could cause accidents that may result to loss of lives or property,” said the council.
Based on studies, LED bulbs are more energy-efficient and longer-lasting — up to 25 years — compared to other types of bulbs that last only for 10 years, it said.
Moreover, LED bulbs are “cost-efficient in terms of electricity consumption” and “considered environmental-friendly because of [their] energy-saving feature.”
This is “very beneficial to the city government, [which pays] for the electric bills” incurred by streetlights, the council said.
While LED bulbs have similar brightness with other bulb types, “over the course of time, its brightness does not dim easily and consumes less power,” the city council resolution further read.
In terms of safety, LED bulbs are “much safer” than other bulb types, which is why the Road Board should switch to using them in all its National Road Lighting Program projects, especially in this city, said the council./PN
