MANILA – A New Bilibid Prison inmate claimed that senators Leila de Lima and Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV were behind the attack against a high-profile detainee during a riot at the national penitentiary last year.
In an affidavit submitted to the Justice department, Tomas Donina said the stabbing of Jaybee Sebastian was aimed at preventing him from testifying against de Lima during a congressional inquiry into the illegal drug trade at the Bilibid.
Donina confessed that he was tasked to carry out the attack.
Sebastian was one of the four injured in the riot that killed convicted drug lord Tony Co.
Earlier Justice secretary Vitaliano Aguirre said a Philippine Navy officer linked de Lima and Trillanes to the attack but admitted there was no sufficient evidence to support the allegation.
Reacting to the Justice secretary’s statement, de Lima said: “Aguirre is lying. He is a chronic liar like his boss and a secretary of Justice without balls. What do you expect from a public official who fakes his own hair?”
She claimed the Duterte administration was “[pinning] all the blame on somebody else except themselves.”
“If I were responsible for the stabbing, it then seems that the [Bilibid] is run and managed by idiots who can’t protect high-profile inmates staying inside the most guarded spot in Philippine prisons,” she said.
Trillanes called Aguirre’s statement “totally absurd.”
“Aguirre and his gang better get their stories straight because we will have a full-blown Senate inquiry to get the truth out,” said Trillanes.
According to Donina, an unnamed Navy officer gave him instructions on the plot to kill Sebastian if the latter testifies in the House.
The inmate also disclosed in the affidavit about an apparent plan to remove Rodrigo Duterte from the presidency.
“Sabi niya, hindi dapat makapagsalita si Jaybee laban kay Ma’am de Lima,” Donina said. “Sabi rin niya gagawin nila ang lahat para mapalaya ako kapag napatalsik si Presidente.”
“Gayun pa man, binilin niya sa akin na kapag natunugan ko na magsasalita si Jaybee laban kay Ma’am de Lima ay tuloy ang plano. Pero kung hindi babaligtad kay Ma’am si Jaybee, cancel ang plano,” he said.
Donina also said the Navy officer told him not to worry since de Lima and Trillanes conspired on the plan and Duterte “will go down.”
“Nagsanib pwersa sina (de Lima at Trillanes). Huwag daw akong mag-alala kasi madami silang kapanalig at kung mapapatay ko si Jaybee ay huwag ako mag-alala dahil makakalaya ako,” said Donina.
“Gagawin daw nila ang lahat ng paraan para makalaya ako dahil pababagsakin daw nila ang Duterte administration,” he added./PN
