MANILA – The decrease in Vice President Leni Robredo’s net worth was mostly due to expenses brought about by the election protest filed by defeated candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., her lawyer said.
“Vice President Leni Robredo’s net worth decreased due mostly to expenses in relation to the election protest filed by Bongbong Marcos, such as filing fee, as well as family and personal expenses,” Barry Gutierrez, legal adviser of Robredo said in a statement on Thursday.
Since assuming office, Robredo’s net worth showed a decrease of around P2.1 million in six months.
A copy of her Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net worth (SALN) released Tuesday shows Robredo’s net worth dipped from P11,053,138 in June 2016 to P8,878,111.43 in December 2016.
The P2 million decrease was in the Vice President’s personal properties, specifically her “cash.”
Earlier this month, Robredo shelled out an initial P8 million out of the P15.44 million required by the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) for her counter-protest against Marcos.
The Vice President said it was difficult for her to raise P8 million, which was why she previously asked the Supreme Court to give her more time.
“Hindi po naging madali para sa atin na maglikom ng P8 million na deposit. Kaya po ito ‘yung dahilan kung bakit humihingi sana tayo ng konting palugit sa Supreme Court,” Robredo told her supporters last May 2.
“‘Yung P8 million, hirap na hirap tayo para ibigay. ‘Yung P36 million po ng mga Marcos sa isang iglap andiyan na kaagad,” she said.
Marcos last month paid a check amounting to P36.023 million.
The tribunal earlier directed Robredo and Marcos to pay a total of P81.46 million for their separate election protests. (ABS-CBN News)
