ILOILO – The Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) cited eight barangay tanods of Lampaya, Leon town for standing their ground when New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked their outpost on June 20.

They placed “the safety of their community above their own to preserve the peace and freedom of the community against terrorism and violence,” said Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr., PPOC chairperson.

Plaques of recognition were given to the eight barangay tanods during PPOC’s meeting on June 27 at the provincial capitol.

Another incentive was being planned for the tanods – livelihood assistance. According to Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Iloilo director Teodora Sumagaysay, the governor and Sangguniang Panlalawigan were free to determine what livelihood incentive to give.

On June 20 government troops and rebels clashed in Barangay Lampaya. A tanod of barangay Lampaya, Romeo Cabalong, was wounded on the left shoulder.

The firefight between troops of the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry Battalion (61IB) – Alpha Company and the rebels erupted around 10:30 a.m. Cabalong was at Barangay Lampaya’s barangay tanod outpost.

Prior to the Army’s arrival, the tanods of Barangay Lampaya engaged a group of armed men who fired at their outpost. According to Barangay Councilman Benito Cantomayor, the men also lobbed an M203 grenade at the outpost.

Cabalong was initially brought to the Aleosan District Hospital in the adjacent town of Alimodian but later transferred to the West Visayas State University Medical Center in Iloilo City./PN
