MANILA – The Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights and Arellano University Lady Chiefs captured the men’s and women’s crown, respectively, in the NCAA Season 92 badminton tournament on Friday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The Knights bagged its second NCAA men’s badminton title after scoring a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Lyceum of the Philippine University Pirates in the championship match.
The Pirates grabbed the early lead as Francis Ramos defeated Knights’ Melvin Sarao, 21-7, 21-12, in first singles. The Knights, however, forced a deciding match as Nathali and Nepthali Pineda edged Pirates’ Renbert Gustillo and John Paul Carolino, 21-12, 21-13.
The Knights, handled by Jojo Mance, completed its fight back as Mark Joseph Sabarre trounced Pirates’ Alex Climaco, 19-21, 21-19, 21-12, in the second singles match.
“It was a team effort because everyone had their own ideas. I thought about the best thing I can do so that everyone will perform and I paved way for those whom I think will really deliver,” Mance said.
“They played well and I’m contented with that. I always remind them to play their game, be humble, and play for the glory and honor of God,” added Mance, who recently moved to the Knights from the National University Bulldogs in UAAP.
Meanwhile, the Arellano University Lady Chiefs dethroned the six-time champion College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers, 2-1, in the championship playoff to claim their first crown in women’s badminton event.
“They played their hearts out and they really fought for this. They were only five in the team but they were determined to win the crown because they wanted it,” said Lady Chiefs head coach Christian Torres./PN
