ILOILO City – This August former city councilor Nielex Tupas would be announcing what he said would be his “biggest political decision.”
Tupas, son of the late Iloilo governor Niel Tupas Sr., would be turning 39 years old on Aug. 11.
“Making crucial decisions on my birth month seems to have become a personal tradition. On your birth month you get to be a year older, more mature to make the right decisions. This is going to be the biggest political decision I will make,” said Tupas.
The former three-termer councilor (2007-2010; 2010-2013; 2013-2016) admitted considering running for congressman of this southern city in next year’s midterm election in the team of Cong. Jerry Treñas who plans to run for mayor.
Treñas himself had been actively talking to him about such possibility since last year, according to Tupas.
“He assured me I could do it,” Tupas told Panay News.
Several groups also assured him of support, he added but declined to name them.
Other personalities reportedly planning to run for congressman are Councilor Joshua Alim and former councilor Julienne Baronda.
Tupas appeared unperturbed.
“I would rather let the people do the comparing. Let them decide who will best represent them in Congress,” said Tupas.
Tupas was first elected to the Sangguniang Panlungsod in 2007. At the age of 27 he was the youngest city council member.
He sought reelection in 2010 and 2013, successfully keeping his No. 1 position in the polls.
“My only competition is myself,” Tupas said. “Lex Tupas today should be better than he was yesterday, and must even better tomorrow.”
His decision this August, he said, should be a “result of serious consideration tungod sang pulso kag panawagan man sang pumoluyo sang syudad.”/PN
