ILOILO City – Government agencies in Western Visayas and local government units (LGUs) should localize different disaster risk reduction management (DRRM) plans at the national level, according to Office of Civil Defense administrator Ricardo Jalad.
“The strength of our DRR lies so much on localizing DRRM plans so there has to be adequate preparedness in LGUs,” explained Jalad, also the executive director of the National DRRM Council.
There are several DRRM plans at the national level. Among these are the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan highlighting the programs, activities and projects of the different agencies involved in disaster management, and the disaster preparedness plan developed by the Department of Interior and Local Government and Department of Social Welfare and Development.
“The various government agencies at the regional level and local government units should have their implementing plans, too,” said Jalad.
He added: “There must be capacity-building on different levels, from the national, regional to LGUs. There has to be organization and there are funds, what we call as the local disaster risk reduction management funds,” he added. (PNA/PN)
