MANILA – The Philippines has the potential to lead the global movement towards gender equality and the empowerment of women, said Sen. Loren Legarda.
Legarda said the country is a leader in the fight to end gender gap concerns.
The 2016 Global Gender Gap Report of the World Economic Forum ranked the Philippines 1st in Asia and 7th in the world in terms of gender parity.
“We have crafted executive laws on gender equality and women empowerment, and the implementation of these policies are improving through the years,” the senator from Antique said.
“We can share with other countries our best practices on women empowerment as well as our laws which can be used as guide by other nations in crafting policies on gender equality,” she added.
Women should have equal opportunity with men in education, workplace, rural development, governance, and leaderships role, stressed Legarda.
She also said that addressing their needs and concerns would not only result in gender empowerment but also contribute to poverty alleviation and economic growth.
The government must also enhance access to finance for women pursuing microenterprises or culture-related enterprises like weaving, said the lawmaker who authored various laws on the protection of women’s rights such as the Magna Carta of Women, Anti-Violence Against Women and Children, and the Anto-Trafficking in Persons Act./PN
