Low voter turnout in Boracay elections

Closure drove voters out of island – official

BORACAY – From the usually crowded voting precincts, the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in the three villages of this island resort attracted not too many voters yesterday.

In Barangay Balabag with 7,371 registered voters, only around 40 percent of voters came out, said Sajid Pelayo, the assigned Department of Education’s Supervising Official at Balabag Elementary School.

Even before the 3 p.m. voting cutoff time, the number of voters had already thinned, he observed.

Some of the registered voters in the barangay displaced by Boracay’s closure returned to their respective provinces due, Pelayo explained.

Barangay Balabag has the second highest number of registered voters in Boracay and Malay town next to Barangay Manoc-manoc with 11,170 registered voters, based on the data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) of Malay.

Barangay Yapak, meanwhile, had 3,370 registered voters.

In Barangay Manoc-manoc, fewer voters was also observed.

The bulk of voters trooped to the Manoc-manoc Elementary School in the morning but their number decreased around noontime.

Despite the usual complaints of missing names on the list of registered voters, the election day remained peaceful, said Pelayo.

Inspector Telmigi Majuk, commander of the police detachment in Barangay Balabag, also said the election went smoothly.

He said the Philippine National Police continued to strictly implement the liquor ban, too.

Majuk said the police forces would remain on alert status until the end of the election period on May 21. (PNA)
