ILOILO – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 6 has deputized 160 Iloilo policemen. They are authorized to enforce traffic-related laws, ordinances and regulations in the province.
According to Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, these deputized policemen will undergo orientation on traffic regulations.
The orientation will be done in two batches – on Jan. 30 to 31 for the first batch and Feb. 1 and 2 for the second batch.
The LTO deputization of police personnel was agreed during the meeting of Task Force on Road Safety called by Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. on Jan. 18.
Banias said the task force also discussed the designation of the alternate and permanent representatives of each agency in the task force.
The task force is made up of LTO, the provincial government of Iloilo, Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Task Force on Road Safety was created to curb the rising number of road accidents in the province.
Data culled from various agencies showed the number of road accidents in Iloilo to have reached 2,095 since January last year. These figures were cited in the memorandum of agreement creating the task force.
Banias said newly-designated LTO regional director Roland Ramos – who assumed office just this Jan. 17 – was supportive of the initiative.
“He is treating this also with a sense of urgency,” said Banias.
Meanwhile, Banias disclosed that the governor is planning to hold a meeting with truckers and haulers not only from Iloilo and all over Panay Island that use the highways of Iloilo.
“They must be familiarized with the traffic regulations and ordinances we will enforce” said Banias./PN
