BORACAY – Land Transportation Office (LTO) regional director Rolando Ramos wants the immediate removal of unregistered vehicles in this popular island resort.

Ramos urged the owners of some 1,800 unregistered motorcycles, delivery vans and golf carts in the island to voluntarily surrender their vehicles so that they can be impounded and ferried to mainland Malay beginning May 7.

“We cannot control traffic unless the roads are controlled. We are helping to save the island [by solving the] traffic problem here,” said Ramos. “Ang mission ko dito, lahat ng illegal vehicles sa isla paalisin.”

He added that LTO personnel and the local police will start the crackdown on unregistered vehicles next week.

But LTO will first gather vehicle operators and owners today at the covered court in Barangay Manoc-Manoc to discuss with them the strict enforcement of traffic laws in the island.

In an inter-agency meeting, Ramos presented the new traffic scheme in Boracay.

The new scheme aims to ease traffic congestion in the island with help of the Department of Transportation, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and the local police, added Ramos.

Moreover, Ramos stressed that the LTO will have to wait until August for the total phaseout of tricycles in Boracay. After which, they would start the apprehensions.

The old tricycle units will be replaced by electric tricycles, or e-trikes, which are environment friendly, said Ramos.

He added that tricycle owners will be required to present smoke emission test certificates upon surrendering their vehicles.

Currently, there are 257 e-trikes operating in Boracay, but only 76 units have LTO franchise, Ramos said. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
