ILOILO City – The curfew in Maasin, Iloilo recommended by the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) had been lifted, announced Mayor Mariano Malones.

The curfew was imposed after New People’s Army rebels raided the municipal police station on Sunday. It was from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Malones said the curfew was lifted on Tuesday evening following his meeting with Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Iloilo director Teodora Sumagaysay, new Maasin police chief Senior Inspector Kent Jerek Capadosa and Sangguniang Bayan members.

The mayor, however, clarified that the existing curfew for minors – from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. – will continue.

Maasin has an ordinance on the curfew for minors.

Malones urged the people of Maasin to unite and shield the municipality from lawless elements.

“Let us help one another restore normalcy in Maasin,” he said.

Right after the NPA raid, the PRO-6 sacked the entire Maasin police force.

“Maasin is a peaceful town. This may have led to the police’s complacency,” said Malones.

After the raid on Sunday, the PRO-6’s Regional Public Safety Battalion temporarily took over the Maasin police station but the following day the Iloilo Police Provincial Office’s Iloilo Public Safety Company was tasked to man it with Senior Inspector Kent Jerek Capadosa as commander.

Malones dismissed insinuations that some residents may have colluded with the rebels. He blamed police intelligence failure for the raid./PN
