ILOILO — Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. turned over a total of P3 million in cash prizes to the municipalities of Maasin and Santa Barbara on July 14, following their victories at the Parada ng Kalayaan 2025 in Manila, where Iloilo’s entries stole the spotlight in the national Independence Day celebration.

The turnover was held during the province’s regular flag-raising ceremony, where Defensor handed over the ceremonial checks to Maasin’s Mayor Francis Amboy and Santa Barbara’s Mayor Dennis Superficial, joined by Vice Gov. Lee Ann Debuque and Provincial Administrator Raul Banias.

Maasin took home the grand prize of P2 million and a trophy after its Tultugan Festival was named champion in the Festival Performance Competition.

The festival showcased indigenous bamboo instruments, choreography, and colorful cultural pageantry that wowed the national audience.

Santa Barbara earned P1 million for winning first runner-up in the Historical Float Competition with its intricately designed “Cry of Santa Barbara” float, paying tribute to the town’s pivotal role in Philippine Revolution against Spain in 1898.

The awards were personally received by Defensor, Debuque, Amboy, and Superficial from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos during a formal ceremony at Kalayaan Hall in Malacañang Palace on July 10.

“These recognitions are not just awards — they are affirmations of Iloilo’s rich cultural identity and the dedication of our people,” said Defensor, expressing his gratitude to all performers, designers, and organizers who made the province’s winning entries possible.

The Parada ng Kalayaan 2025 marked the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence, with various provinces showcasing their heritage in front of national dignitaries and guests. Iloilo’s strong presence highlighted its enduring commitment to culture, history, and excellence./PN
