SAGAY City – Randolf Magbanua and Jenelyn Nobleza stamped their dominance in long-distance running as they topped the inaugural North Negros Marathon, a 42-kilometer race that drew more than 150 local and international athletes across three cities of northern Negros.
Magbanua, representing Negros Road Runners, clocked an impressive 2:33:33 to capture the men’s crown, finishing well ahead of teammate Maclin Sadia (2:42:16) and Bacolod Road Stallion’s Jeson Agravante (2:46:17).
In the women’s side, Nobleza of Bacolod Road Stallion set the pace with a 3:14:36 finish, leaving behind Sipalay sisters Myrel (3:18:29) and Mitche Benignos (3:22:15) of the Sipalay City Running Team.
Relay teams also thrilled the crowd as Arjie Baynes and April Boy Hemongala ruled the men’s relay, while Aires Emat and Koonerjane Tigayon bagged the women’s title.
Starting from Gregorio Lauron Sr. Park in Manapla, the race wound through Cadiz City and ended at Sagay City Public Plaza, showcasing not only endurance but also the unity of North Negros communities.
“This event showed not only discipline and endurance but also the spirit of unity across our communities,” said 2nd District Rep. Alfredo Marañon III, who backed the race along with the local governments of Manapla, Cadiz, and Sagay. “I am committed to support the North Negros Marathon next year.”
Sagay City Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva, Manapla Mayor Mika Escalante, Provincial Board Member Arthur Christopher Marañon, and other officials joined runners and supporters at the event.
Race coordinator Joachim Sarrosa said the strong turnout proved the potential of the marathon to grow further. “We are thankful for all the participants who joined this pioneering marathon. With the support of our LGUs and Congressman Marañon, we hope to make the North Negros Marathon bigger and more exciting next year,” he said.
Winners took home prizes that included hotel accommodations at Nature’s Village Resort in Talisay, Adidas Evo SL shoes, Garmin Forerunner 55 watches, and running gear worth ₱70,000./PN
