MANILA – Malacañang has ordered the suspension of Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Arthur Carandang.
The Office of the Executive Secretary has “formally charged … Carandang for grave misconduct following the disclosure of alleged bank transactions of the President,” Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said in a press briefing on Monday.
Carandang was the one who approved last Oct. 6 the Ombudsman decision to dismiss former Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog from government service.
Last year, Carandang disclosed they had information on transactions involving President Rodrigo Duterte’s bank accounts amounting to P1 million.
The overall deputy ombudsman claimed documents from the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) indicated such transactions.
But the AMLC denied releasing such documents.
“Furthermore, the Office of Executive the Secretary placed … Carandang under preventive suspension for a period of 90 days effective immediately upon receipt of this order,” Roque added.
The presidential spokesman said Carandang will be made to answer within 10 days upon receipt of the order.
In its decision to dismiss Mabilog, the Ombudsman said the then Iloilo City chief executive failed to explain the P8,981,082.52 increase in his net worth as reflected in his 2012 and 2013 statements of assets, liabilities and net worth./PN
