BORACAY – World-renowned urban planner Architect Felino “Jun” Palafox Jr. will work with the local government of Malay in laying out development plans for this island resort.
Mayor Ciceron Cawaling signed with Palafox a memorandum of agreement for a seven-month formulation of a Master Development Plan, according to Municipal Information Officer Jimmy Maming.
The plan, which may include “architectural and tourism” infrastructures, “covers Boracay but may expand to the entire Malay,” said Maming.
“The Cawaling administration leans toward the environmental sustainability of this island resort,” Maming said.
It was learned that the local government has been planning to work with Palafox since last year. The agreement was signed just this Wednesday.
The municipal government said it hopes to use the Master Development Plan to lure more tourists and boost the island’s environmental and tourism sustainability.
More than 2 million tourists visited Boracay in 2017 – the highest in its history of accounting tourist arrivals – according to the Municipal Tourism Office.
“We recorded an increase of 16 percent compared to [the arrivals] in 2016,” Municipal Tourism Officer Felix De Los Santos said.
Palafox is the president of Palafox Architecture and a senior partner at Palafox Associates.
He has done over 1,200 local and international projects, including the master planning of more than 17 billion square meters of land area and the architectural design of more than 12 million square meters of building floor area in 39 countries./PN
