MANILA – Filipino-American forward Jamie Malonzo is officially taking his talents overseas, signing a one-year deal as an Asian Quota Player with Kyoto Hannaryz for the 2025–2026 Japan B.League season.
The former Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings standout expressed his gratitude and excitement as he embarks on his first international stint. He also thanked the Hannaryz organization for the opportunity to compete in one of Asia’s top basketball leagues.
“I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome I’ve received from the entire Kyoto Hannaryz family,” said Malonzo. “It’s an honor to join such a passionate team and community in Japan.”
“First, I want to thank the team management for believing in me and giving me this incredible opportunity. Your support means a lot, and I’m eager to contribute to our success this season,” he added.
Malonzo also expressed his eagerness to build connections with fans and teammates alike, emphasizing his commitment to making a difference on and off the court.
“I’m genuinely excited about what lies ahead, and I can’t wait to hit the court with my teammates, bringing energy and determination to every game,” he said. “I’m looking forward to building strong connections with all of you, both on and off the court, and helping to elevate the basketball culture in Kyoto.”
Malonzo, who started his PBA career with NorthPort Batang Pier before joining Ginebra in 2022, becomes the second PBA player to suit up for Kyoto, following the path of Matthew Wright in 2022.
Meanwhile, Gin Kings head coach Tim Cone expressed his disappointment with Malonzo’s decision to move to Japan, but he is not hindering his star forward for his career move.
“We’re certainly disappointed Jamie wanted to leave Ginebra, but we’re never going to hold back a player who wants to better his situation,” Cone said in a statement sent to Panay News.
“We’ve known for a couple of years that Jamie had interest in playing in Japan, so it was not a big surprise. We wish him well,” added Cone, who also said that Malonzo’s exit will also create opportunities for other players.
