
BACOLOD City – A resident of Barangay 35 here sustained serious burns after accidentally coming into contact with a high-voltage power line while attempting to install an internet cable himself on Wednesday, May 14.
According to authorities, the male victim, whose name was being withheld, was setting up a WiFi cable for a computer shop along Rodriguez Avenue in Purok Malipayon when the incident occurred.
At around 2 p.m., while trying to extend the cable across the street, the victim used a plastic bottle as a makeshift weight to guide it. However, the bottle struck a primary electrical line, resulting in severe electrical burns to his right hand. He was immediately rushed to a regional hospital for treatment.
Resident, meanwhile, confirmed that the victim was not a licensed or trained telecommunications technician.
In a statement, the Negros Electric and Power Corporation (Negros Power) emphasized the dangers of performing work near electrical lines without proper training or safety equipment.
“This incident underscores the critical importance of engaging only qualified personnel for work involving electrical infrastructure,” the statement read. “Improper handling can result in serious injuries or even fatalities.”
Negros Power strongly urged the public to avoid do-it-yourself (DIY) efforts involving electrical lines and to always consult licensed professionals./PN
