ILOILO City – Barangay captains of Mandurriao district appeared to have become frustrated with Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
They wanted him to swap posts with Cong. Jerry Treñas in next year’s midterm election but were apparently ignored.
Frustrated, they came out with a resolution.
“The ABC (Association of Barangay Councils) of Mandurriao has relayed their messages to Mayor Jose S. Espinosa III to run for Congress but the latter will not listen,” read a part of the resolution dated April 3, 2018.
Fourteen barangay captains led by ABC Mandurriao president Sergio Causing signed the resolution.
“The ABC Mandurriao believed that further talks with…Espinosa will only become an exercise in futility,” stated the barangay captains, thus they decided to come out with the resolution publicly expressing their desire for the mayor to run for congressman and Treñas to run for mayor.
They made it clear, though, that they remain “very supportive” of the two politicians and wanted “to unite the Treñas-Espinosa Group.”
The Mandurriao barangay captains were the third ABC to call on Espinosa to give way to his brother-in-law Treñas in the race for city mayor next year. The two others were the ABCs of Molo and Jaro districts.
In December 2016 when he was still vice mayor, Espinosa was endorsed by Treñas for mayor. Treñas then announced he was quitting politics after finishing his third and final term in June 2019.
In February this year, however, Treñas said he may run for mayor.
Espinosa refused to squarely address the issue and simply said it was too early to talk about politics and he would rather focus on his work for now./PN
