March-April school break in Bacolod pushed

BY DOMINIQUE GABRIEL G. BAÑAGA

BACOLOD City – Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez supports the proposal for a return to the previous March-to-April school break due to the high temperatures being experienced in schools not just in the city but also in Negros Occidental.

According to Benitez, he also sees no problem with the Department of Education (DepEd) shortening face-to-face classes or switching to blended learning if classroom temperatures become hazardous for students and teachers.

It is much better, however, to just revert to the old March to April school summer break, he said.

In the meantime, Benitez said, the city government is searching for ways to mitigate the effects of the high temperatures in schools. More electric fans will be distributed to various schools, he revealed.

Also in the pipeline is the appointment of additional school nurses, he revealed, to check the health of students and respond to medical emergencies.

Due to the high temperatures, several schools in the city have already adopted new class schedules.

The Bacolod City National High School is now observing half-day classes. Classes begin as early as 6:30 a.m. and ends at 11 a.m.

The Negros Occidental High School in Bacolod City has also adopted a half-day schedule with classes beginning as early as 7 a.m. up to 12 noon. Its Grade 12 school schedule, on the other hand, is from 1 p.m. to 5:10 p.m./PN
