MANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will urge nations involved in the escalating Middle East conflict to exercise restraint and strictly adhere to international law when he attends high‑level engagements at the United Nations during his working visit to the United States next week.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Marcos will be in New York from March 9 to 10 where he is expected to deliver the Philippines’ position calling for peaceful dialogue and respect for the United Nations Charter amid rising geopolitical tensions in the region.
DFA spokesperson Angelica Escalona underscored the significance of the President’s visit, noting that the trip comes at a crucial time as the international community grapples with the worsening situation in the Middle East.
“Napakahalaga po ng biyaheng ito, ito po ang tamang pagkakataon ngayon dahil sa mga nangyayari sa Middle East,” Escalona said.
The DFA said Marcos will emphasize the need for restraint among countries involved in the conflict and push for diplomatic solutions anchored on international law and the principles of the United Nations.
On the sidelines of the visit, the President is also scheduled to meet with United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres to discuss key global issues and the Philippines’ role in promoting peace and cooperation.
Marcos will likewise attend the opening of the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, one of the United Nations’ largest annual gatherings focused on advancing gender equality and women’s rights worldwide.
He is also expected to deliver remarks during a special session of the United Nations General Assembly where global leaders will tackle pressing international concerns, including ongoing geopolitical conflicts and their wider implications./PN
