ILOILO City – A proposed ordinance seeks to declare every May 3 as “Mass Media Day” in this city.
Councilor Love Joy Baronda called for the declaration as she noted that channels of knowing the news increased with the upsurge of social media.
“Differentiating legitimate news from those that are fake has become difficult because people would just read whatever they read in the internet,” she observed.
The Mass Media Day will allow mass media practitioners to introduce their practices as well as highlight the different forms of mass media to the public, Baronda added.
In baring her proposal, the councilor stressed that the 1987 Philippine Constitution recognizes the role of media in nation-building by serving as vanguards of freedom of speech.
“Having a venue to learn about the media that provide legitimate information and different views of significant issues will help Ilonggos make democratic decisions,” according to Baronda.
The proposed piece of local legislation will be subjected to a public consultation by the city council. (PNA)
