BACOLOD City — A 26-year-old mechanic died after being electrocuted while attempting to clear an overhead power line obstructing construction equipment in Barangay Talacdan, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, on October 22.
The victim, identified only as alias “Romel,” was a resident of Hacienda Amigos Dos, Barangay Tinapaan, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.
Police said the incident occurred at around 3 p.m. while the victim was working as a tire man and mechanic for a construction supplies company contracted to undertake construction work in the village.
Based on the initial police investigation, a self-loading boom truck being transported by an excavator accidentally caught an overhead electrical distribution wire attached to a utility post along the route.
In an attempt to lift the wire and allow the equipment to pass underneath, Romel used a rope to clear the obstruction.
However, he accidentally came into direct contact with the energized power line and suffered a severe electric shock.
He was immediately rushed to the Lorenzo D. Zayco Memorial District Hospital in Kabankalan City for emergency medical treatment.
However, the attending physician declared him dead on arrival./PN
