ILOILO — The high line canal of the Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project Stage II has reached 50 percent completion, with authorities pushing full-speed construction to meet a June 2027 deadline that is expected to dramatically boost irrigation and rice production in Western Visayas.
The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Region 6 said the milestone marks a critical step toward securing a stable water supply for thousands of farmers across Iloilo, amid rising demand for food security and climate-resilient agriculture.
Engineer Jonel Borres, NIA-6 regional manager, confirmed during a media briefing that construction is progressing steadily despite weather-related setbacks.
“For our high line canal, sobra na kita 50% physical accomplishment. Sige-sige ang aton construction. Ang gina-traverse sang canal halin sa Calinog, Lambunano, Badiangan, Janiuay. Actually may siyam ka munisipalidad ining aton high line canal kon completuhon ang 80 kilometros,” said Borres.
The canal will play a crucial role in increasing agricultural productivity by ensuring reliable irrigation.
“Once operational, the canal will ensure a reliable water supply for agricultural lands, which is essential for increasing rice production in the region,” Borres said.
Projections show a significant jump in annual rice output, from the current 140,000 tons to as much as 300,000 tons once the system becomes fully operational.
The project, with a total budget of approximately P5.75 billion, underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the agriculture sector and rural economy.
“Ang target (completion) sini asta sa sunod nga tuig, June 2027. Ini ang aton nga timeline. Bira-bira gid ang aton trabaho,” Borres stressed.
However, NIA-6 acknowledged challenges that could affect timelines, particularly adverse weather conditions and rising fuel costs. It is working closely with contractors to accelerate construction and ensure on-time completion.
Beyond irrigation, the high line canal is expected to serve as a sustainable water source for multiple uses, further driving economic growth in Iloilo and strengthening resilience among farming communities./PN
