ILOILO City – Fire struck a house in Barangay Poblacion, Badiangan, Iloilo, killing its lone occupant, a mentally-ill man.
Benedicto Mamon was 70 years old. Personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection recovered his charred remains around 8 p.m. on July 18.
The house was made of light materials so the fire ate it up fast. As of this writing, the fire bureau was yet to determine what sparked the blaze.
According to Badiangan police station’s Police Officer 2 Romy Aligante, Mamon had been occupying the house for over a year already after the real owners abandoned it.
The old man was often seen begging for food from other people in the barangay, he added.
“We are investigating if the fire was an accident or a case of arson,” said Aligante.
From what the police so far gathered, Mamon had the habit of burning used clothing./PN
