BOCAUE, Bulacan – Meralco Bolts sustained its fiery start to score 98-91 against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings in Game 6 of the PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-seven finals last night at the Philippine Arena.
Allen Durham led the way with double-double 28 points and 19 rebounds, Bacolodnon Reynel Hugnatan added 24 markers, while Garvo Lanete and Chris Newsome had 15 and 10 points, respectively, for Bolts.
Bolts can notch its first-ever PBA championship if it clobbers Kings – the defending champion – in the do-or-die Game 7 on Friday evening at the same venue.
Meralco opened the match with a 12-4 lead on hits by Hugnatan, Durham and Newsome. Ginebra rallied to within 10-17 but Bolts pulled away anew behind Durham and Lanete for a 29-17 edge.
Kings went on to cut the deficit 24-29 early in the second quarter but Bolts responded with a strong run on triples by Baser Amer and Jared Dillinger to widen the advantage to its largest 44-24.
Hits from Earl Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee made for a strong start for Kings to cut the deficit 69-75 in the third but Bolts regained an 85-72 lead on treys by Dillinger and Hugnatan.
In the final quarter, Kings made its last push to come to within 86-90 on a basket by Mark Caguioa but inside hits from Durham followed by a triple from Hugnatan increased Bolts’ lead 98-88.
Brownlee finished with 23 points and nine rebounds, Gregory Slaughter added 18 markers, while Thompson and LA Tenorio finished with 12 points each for Kings./PN
